Romanelli (Umbria) Organic
On the hills of Montefalco, in the heart of Umbria, in an extraordinary area surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, our family has cared for and preserved what nature has generously given us for three generations.
We put our hearts into our work, so the wine and olive oils we produce reflect the excellent quality and uniqueness of the soil, the plants and the microclimates that interact in our ecosystem. And because we respect all this, we practice farming that is attentive to the requirements of the land and that maintains the delicate balance that characterizes our environment.
Our olive oils are born of organic farming, cold-pressed, unusually balanced and rich in antioxidants. We also produce wines from our grapes; complex and structured, they express our history, our land and our work.
This approach gave birth to two projects on the estate: Romanelli Nature and Romanelli Tourism, both testimony to the farming philosophy the family follows. Romanelli Nature is an eco-sustainability project; it was developed to help support biodiversity and to care for the environment through installations of bird boxes throughout the vineyards.
Romanelli Tourism is a ‘wine-tourism’ program linked to the farm’s production, and related to the idea of eco-tourism.

Romanelli Nature
Romanelli Nature is an eco-sustainability farming program developed to contribute to biodiversity and help care for the environment. Since 2008, we have positioned bird boxes with live webcams inside throughout the vineyards, to safeguard important species in the territory of Montefalco. One of the objectives of these bird boxes is to cover the shortage of natural nesting places, a problem that exists in the countryside even today. In addition to the naturalistic goal, it is also advantageous to encourage insect-eating birds to frequent the farming area. Another advantage - Increasing the number of birds of prey also helps in the fight against rodents.
Our Philosophy
We believe that the balance of the ecosystem is of utmost importance and that insect control should be handled by birds rather than by pesticides.
Our philosophy also rejects chemical fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides, and the presence of these birds in our vineyards helps keep us on track. The benefits are relevant and significant, because healthy plants generate excellent fruit in an uncontaminated environment.
Technology for Nature
Another important new feature is the combination of advanced technologies in these nests, with the use of high-definition webcams that few others in the world can boast. The animal species that Romanelli Nature follows live include falcon kestrel, tawny owl, great tit, redstart and others. Cameras are positioned inside the nests to observe the secret lives of these birds and their families, live on our web site.

Our wines
We want our wines to be the expression of the unique gifts that the land, the vines, the people and the microclimates that interact in our ecosystem bring together every day in the fields. We know that true quality is obtained in the country from healthy, balanced vines that yield perfectly ripened, whole grapes. Organic fertilizer, grass cover between the rows, correct management of the land and foliage, direct exposure of the grapes to the sun and low yields per hectare are just some of the agricultural practices that we undertake day after day to reach our objectives. All these actions are in harmony with the philosophy of the Romanelli Nature project, which rejects chemical fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides and strives to maintain the balance of the ecosystem with the installation of bird boxes. We have chosen to rediscover and value native varietals like Sagrantino, the true soul of our red wines and of our territory and to follow a path that is based on tradition and enhanced with research and innovation. |
